National Fire Service

The National Fire Service has been fighting fires since its inception in 1846, when it was called the Fire Brigade. It is led by a Chief Fire Officer who is the head of department.  He is aided by an Assistant Chief Fire Officer and an administrative staff (support) and firefighting personnel. There are one hundred and sixty-six (166) employees (149 males and 17 females) and one hundred and fifty (150) volunteer firefighters who operates out of the fourteen Fire Stations located country wide. 

Today in 2022 the National Fire Service have a fleet of Fifty-four (54) vehicles in the form of thirty-six (36) fire trucks, eleven (11) motorcycle five (5) utility vehicles one (1) Tanker and two (2) Ambulance distributed country wide.

The National Fire Service and Belize Heroes is piloting its Emergency Medical Response (EMS) program to the residents of San Ignacio/Santa Elena and surrounding communities. This program provides EMS to an area of the country that has seen an increase in motor vehicle collisions with virtually no EMS system.

Vision

To make Belize safer from fires and explosive hazards through an efficient and effective Fire Service.

The Belize national fire service shall create a safer Belize from fires and explosive hazards for its people through public education and highly trained personnel working in cooperation with other relevant agencies and organizations.

Legislation

The work of the National Fire Service is legislated by Chapter 137 of the Laws of Belize, the Public Service Regulations 2001 and Belize Statutory Instrument no. 145 of 1992 Government Workers Regulation.

Function & Duties

  • Extinguish any fire occurring in any part of Belize.
  • Protect life and property endangered by any fires occurring in Belize.
  • Inspection of specific buildings to ensure prevention of fire and other disasters for the protection of life and property against the dangers of fire.
  • Extricate casualties from accident arising from traffic accidents and collapsed buildings.

General Responsibilities For Station

  • Respond to all emergency calls, example house fires, bush fire, butane leaks, road traffic accident etc.
  • Conduct fire safety inspection on existing public buildings and also public building   under construction.
  • Facilitate the public and especially school with fire prevention lectures and fire escape plans.
  • Liaison with local agency (Town councils, NEMO) and others for betterment of the community, especially in time of disasters
