National Climate Change Office

The BNCCO was established in 2015 as the Government of Belize’s response to the climate crisis. Our goal is to facilitate the coordination of Belize’s national and international response to climate change.

Mandate

  • Communicate all aspects of climate change to the public, private sector, local communities, schools and relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate initiatives between the public and private sectors to build Belize’s resiliency to climate change.
  • Mainstream climate change information and ideologies with the aim of embedding climate change in everyday Belizean conversations, lifestyle, actions and decision making.
  • Coordinate the country’s national, regional and international response to Climate Change and ensure the development of a consistent framework across line ministries and agencies for mitigating the effects of Climate Change.
  • Coordinate Belize’s external response to the various reporting and other requirements of UNFCCC and attract or source funds to support the national effort.
  • Fulfil international obligations such as submitting: Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Communication’s (NCs) and the Biennial Update Report (BUR) to the UNFCCC.
  • Lead Belize’s national and international agenda on climate change, including coordinating the National GHG Inventory, and establish an appropriate GHG Management System.
  • Coordinate climate change activities across sectors, support Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects, and mainstream mitigation and adaptation strategies into the country’s sustainable development agenda.
  • Coordinate the development of policies, programs, projects, studies and assessments related to climate change and building climate resilience.

Accomplishments:

  • Submitted Belize’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC’s) in September 2021 to the UNFCCC
  • Updated the Biennial Update Report (BUR)
  • Drafted a Low Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS)
  • Developed a Climate Finance Strategy
  • Developed Belize’s First Agroforestry Policy
  • In the process of developing an MRV system

Environmental change and disasters have always been major drivers of migration. However, climate change predictions for the 21st century indicate that even more people are expected to be on the move as extreme weather-related events, such as floods, droughts and storms become more frequent and intense (IPCC, 2014), and changes in precipitation and temperature patterns impact livelihoods and human security.
