In 2012, the Government of Belize confirmed its commitment to a sustainable development path with the creation of the Sustainable Development Unit. This commitment was reiterated in 2020 with the establishment of a Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management.
The Sustainable Development Unit coordinates and encourages the integration of the 2030 Agenda into Belize’s national frameworks. Core unit functions include support to the Ministry of Economic Development in the preparation of national medium-term plans, track and monitor the progress of the SDG implementation in Belize, lead the preparation of Voluntary National Reports and generate ownership of the 2030 Agenda through awareness campaigns.

Mission
Support the process of achieving sustainable development through the facilitation of an integrated and participatory approach in the integration of the principles of sustainable development and SDGs in national and sector plans, by tracking and reporting of the SDGs, by building awareness of the SDGs and resource mobilization in support of the SDGs implementation.
Services Offered
Serving as Belize’s focal point to the 2030 Agenda, the SDU is recognized and accepted as the link between the global agenda and the national agenda making the unit an essential actor in the SDG implementation. In promoting the realization of the SDGs, the unit supports the following:
- Integration and mainstreaming of the SDGs into national and sector plan, policies, and strategies
- Support the Ministry of Economic Development, planning ministry, with the development of the medium-term strategies.
- Coordinate and report data request on the SDG indicators
- Promote and coordinate the population of the SDG data into the Belize National Statistical System portal
- Lead the preparation of Voluntary National Report that are to be presented at the High-Level Political Forum
- Resource mobilization for SDG implementation
- Raise awareness of the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs
Public Awareness
Creating ownership of the 2030 Agenda is key to the realization of the SDGs, hence, the SDU is in the process of developing a robust communication strategy.
